Recently we have been hearing about the Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus and many people are wondering how it will affect reopening, mask wearing mandates, and social distancing. Here is what we know so far… viruses constantly change through mutations that create new strains of virus (called variants) over time. Some virus variants emerge and then disappear, while others persist or become common. Public health becomes concerned about a SARS-CoV-2 variant when it affects COVID-19 transmission, severity, testing, treatment, or vaccine effectiveness. Scientists and public health officials are studying variants to learn more about how to control their spread. The California Department of Public Health collects data on variant sequences from a variety of different sources to assemble a picture of the different strains currently circulating in California. The CDPH is working to understand how the variant might impact California and they will provide information as it comes.
