“We Are The Arc Family” The Importance of Self-Advocacy by Joseph Meadours

I would like to share with you my story, how and why I got involved with The Arc of California. I have been involved at a local chapter in Oklahoma since early 1990 when I lived there. We didn’t have a State Chapter like in California. At first, I didn’t know what was going to happen in my life because of my developmental disabilities. Today, I make my own decisions and right choices thanks to The Arc of California. They have helped me in different ways. I am glad that I got involved. I have helped them in many ways too! The Arc has changed how I look at life locally, statewide, and nationally.  It has helped me grow. Now I have many friends across the country.

I became a representative of People First to The Arc when I moved to California. The Arc found me a place to live, support services, and a job. Then I had a stroke. The Arc helped me get rehabilitation services for my   recovery. I had to change my job, but I still volunteered as a board member, serving on the State Board as a self-advocate. I was also elected to the National Board of Directors for The Arc. I became a public speaker across the country for the rights of people with disabilities, especially as victims seeking help in the Criminal Justice system.  I helped start CROP (Capitol Region Organizing Project) in Sacramento. Training was provided by The Arc of California. I continue to be a lifelong advocate and community organizer for seniors and people with disabilities.

We are delighted to share a series of stories from The Arc of California families. It has been, and still is, the mission of The Arc of California to be a voice for families of children with developmental disabilities. The Arc team is working on behalf of families with the Legislature and Administration to develop solutions that will address the most pressing challenges facing the disability community. We would love to hear your story!
