For the last 24 years I have been blessed to be the mother of a son with multiple disabilities. It has been a tough road for him and our family. As a single mother who has had to work outside the home, finding excellent caregivers has been a challenge. The Arc of Butte County (The Arc) has helped us greatly as our respite provider. When COVID hit in 2020 our lives changed, as many others did. With a high-risk son, we were forced to change everything. We could no longer have the active life my son was accustomed to. We limited those we came in contact with and trusted his care to a small select group of caregivers from The Arc.
We have been a long-standing family receiving support from The Arc and have utilized a number of their programs. Thirteen years ago, I was approached by a member of their Board of Directors. They wanted more parents of those in the disability community to join them. I sat as an active Board Member for 13 years, and was most recently the President.
Last fall, the Executive Director of The Arc of Butte County retired. Given my passion for the organization and the people we serve, I applied for the position and am now the current Executive Director. I am so proud to lead an organization that serves the disability community in numerous ways. I know what it is like to be a mom of a son with disabilities and I think this experience and passion certainly increases my dedication and understanding of this incredible community. I still have a lot to learn in my new position but I have the support of a fantastic staff, clients and families.
