Last Thursday, March 22, the California State Assembly, under the leadership of Assemblymember Jim Frazier, adopted HR 89. This resolution officially recognizes March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.
In a heartfelt speech from the floor Assemblymember Frazier recognized the advocacy efforts of our team at the Arc of California along with Disability Rights California, the State Council on Developmental Disabilities, and the California Disability Services Association.
Mr. Frazier then moved beyond simple recognition calling on each of his Assembly colleagues to author one bill this year aimed at improving the lives of Californians with developmental disabilities. He said, “HR89 is written to commemorate this year’s theme; ‘See Me for Me.’ Well, let’s let them know that they [people with developmental disabilities] are not alone… If we – all eighty of us – took one bill to change the lives of these wonderful people, look at what a difference you would make.”
