Re-Entering Disability Services:

A Special Message for Families of Children and Adults with Intellectual Disabilities

It’s been three months since schools, day programs, and other services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) abruptly closed. While we fully understand the reasons for such a drastic measure, it doesn’t mean that it has been easy for those of us who support a family member who had their daily routine disrupted without any warning, and who misses friends, program activities, and structure. Parents, caregivers, and self-advocates never expected to still be at home as we start the summer, and we are uneasy with the uncertainty of not knowing when–or even if–our family members will return to their normal routines.

Families have had little information about the re-opening of schools and programs, and we have many questions about the timeline and process and what changes to expect. In my conversations with families across the state, I hear that they are beginning to talk to the person with I/DD about concerns and any questions they have about returning to their program, which seems like a very good idea. They may be wondering if their schedule will be the same, if they will be riding the bus, if their friends and the staff they know will be there, and if they will have the same activities. Please fill out this survey from The Arc California asking what your experiences have been and what your major concerns are. Your responses will enable us to be sure that we are advocating for your needs. After all, direct input from families should be foremost as activities and plans are formulated. One of our Board members, Raymond Hampson, said to me recently, “We all have a story to tell”. We want to hear your story.

Un mensaje especial para las familias de niños y adultos con discapacidades intelectuales

Han sido tres meses desde que las escuelas, programas diarios y otros servicios para personas con discapacidades intelectuales y del desarrollo (I/DD, por sus siglas en inglés) cerraron abruptamente. Mientras entendemos las razones para estas drásticas medidas, no significa que han sido fáciles para aquellos que apoyan a un familiar que interrumpió su rutina sin ningún aviso y que extraña a sus amigos, actividades en su programa y estructura. Padres, cuidadores y defensores nunca esperaron seguir en sus hogares al inicio del verano, y seguimos preocupados con la incertidumbre de no saber cuándo — o si siquiera — nuestros familiares podrán volver a sus rutinas.

Las familias han tenido poca información sobre la reapertura de escuelas y programas, y nosotros muchas preguntas sobre los tiempos, procesos y los cambios a esperar. En mis conversaciones con familias a través del estado, he escuchado que han empezado conversaciones con las persona con I/DD sobre preocupaciones y preguntas que ellos tienen sobre el retorno a estos programas, lo que parece una muy buena idea. Preguntan si sus horarios serán los mismos, si volverán a montarse en el bus, si sus amigos y personal de apoyo sabrá que ellos estarán ahí, y si tendrán las mismas actividades.
