Caring Futures Announces the Launch of Self-Paced Future Planning Class for Caregivers

The Arc of California is proud to announce the launch of its self-paced “Future is Now” class series by Caring Futures — a program of The Arc of California! In response to the hundreds of caregivers who have been on a waitlist to take the future planning course, we wanted to meet their need for flexibility and create a class that can be taken at the caregiver’s convenience.

We hope that by being able to access the recorded class series at a time that works for you and your family, more caregivers will be able to start their future planning journey. Spanish self-paced classes will be coming soon.

A special thank you to certified future planning parent-educator Felisa Strickland for collaborating on the self-paced curriculum and sharing her personal knowledge and perspective on the future-planning process. Felisa is not only a parent to her daughter with developmental disabilities, but she is also a board member for The Arc of California and the board president of the Alpha Resource Center.

Each month, Felisa will offer Open Office Hours for those taking the Future is Now self-paced course. She will answer questions about the future planning classes and provide guidance to help make the planning process as smooth as possible for caregivers starting the journey. The link to register for the monthly meeting will be in the Class Portal that can be accessed after registering for the class.

The class series includes:

  • Comprehensive Future Planning Guide to design a support plan for you and your family member with disabilities;
  • Workbooks for parent/caregiver and family member;
  • Guidance on developing a future plan step-by-step.

Celebrating National Family Caregivers Month in November

Families are often the primary source of support for older adults and people with disabilities. In fact, today in America, more than 53 million family caregivers provide unpaid care.

That’s why every November we celebrate National Family Caregivers Month. While family caregivers should be celebrated and cherished every day, this is a time to recognize and honor caregivers nationally, raise awareness around caregiving issues, educate communities, and work to increase support for our nation’s caregivers.

At The Arc of California, we have established a program called “Caring Futures“, which offers a community of support, trainings and resources for caregivers of an adult family member with a disability. Caring Futures has monthly future planning and self-care classes, a robust resource center – all in English and Spanish. Additionally, there are dozens of educational webinars on a variety of topics for parents and caregivers, including special needs trusts, affordable housing, advocacy, self-determination program, public benefits, supported-decision making, navigating the healthcare system, sibling support, family therapy, self-care, and much more.

We know being a family caregiver can be a tough job, and want to share the caregiving journey with you. We want you to know you are not alone.

This month, as an essential part of the life-long support system for your family member with a disability, we are putting you first! Visit our CaringFutures.org website and learn more about our upcoming classes and webinars. Happy Family Caregivers Month!
