National Advocacy Organizations Weigh-in on President Biden’s Pick for The Supreme Court

By Teresa Anderson, Director of Public Policy, The Arc/UCP California Collaboration

The message to President Joe Biden is clear! The next nominee to the United States Supreme Court should be “a judge or lawyer who has demonstrated an understanding of and commitment to a fair day in court for people with disabilities and other historically marginalized populations.” There is no question that over the 42 years as a federal judge – 27 of those years as a judge on the U.S. Supreme Court – Justice Stephen G. Breyer was a strong voice for people with disabilities. His consistent dedication to protecting the civil rights of people with disabilities has ensured a fair day in court. We support the ask from the National Advocacy Organizations – it is really quite simple: “We ask you to choose a Supreme Court nominee who, like Justice Breyer, respects the role of past Supreme Court decisions in setting legal standards for critical civil rights for people with disabilities.”
