On Friday morning Governor Jerry Brown released an updated version of his proposed budget after tax revenues have been accounted for – referred to as the “May Revise”. Despite a multi-billion dollar surplus this year, the Governor has continued to propose a cut to organizations that provide services to Californians with developmental disabilities by mandating a 14-day uniform holiday schedule. Even worse is that the Governor’s estimated cut from this proposal has increased from $5.6 million to $10.2 million, as a result of an error in the original calculations.
Since its implementation in 2009, The Arc California and UCP San Diego have fought this cut in court and will continue to do so. This year, however, more than ever we believe it is wrong both in terms of policy and basic morals to force people with developmental disabilities to live additional days without critical services, especially considering the state’s surplus. We call on the Legislature to reject the Governor’s proposed cut to our community.
