Tuesday, April 10, the California Assembly Select Committee on Community and Law Enforcement Relations, chaired by Assemblyman Jim Cooper (D – Elk Grove), held an informational hearing on the State Assessment on Interactions Between People with Disabilities and Law Enforcement. Presenters included Patty Schulz, CEO of The Arc of Ventura County; Jordan Lindsey, Executive Director of The Arc CA, and various disability advocates and representatives of law enforcement.
The hearing discussed at depth several existing programs that support positive interactions between law enforcement and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including voluntary databases, forums promoting dialogue, and increased training. The Arc’s main effort to improve the criminal justice experience for people with I/DD, Pathways To Justice, was discussed specifically by The Arc of Ventura County.
