When in Washington, D.C. with the representative from The Arc on Capitol Hill, I realized that we have many issues, but our human and civil rights are the same. The Ban the Ban protest by the Muslim community in front of the Supreme Court was just another example of the need to join all of our voices together in protest when one group’s equal justice and civil rights are being trampled. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg describes much better than I, the challenge we face in the words written on the Supreme Court building above my head in this photo.
“Equal Justice Under Law is etched about the US Supreme Court’s grand entrance. It is an ideal that remains aspirational. Thanks in part to efforts by lawyers, race, gender, and other incidents of birth no longer bar access to justice as they once did. It remains true, however, that the poor, and even the middle class, encounter financial impediments to a day in court. They do not enjoy the secure access available to those with full purses or political muscle.”
