The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed on July 26, 1990 by then President George H.W. Bush. This groundbreaking piece of national civil rights legislation guarantees people with disabilities the right to participate fully in every aspect of American society, while at the same time protecting us from discrimination on the basis of our disabilities. Based largely on Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 the ADA remains one of our country’s most far reaching pieces of civil rights law.
This Thursday marks the 28th anniversary of the signing of the ADA. This anniversary is an apt reminder to take a moment to reflect on the progress that has been made and to dedicate ourselves to continued advocacy.
In Sacramento there will be a celebration on the west steps of the Capitol building from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. I encourage those of you who are local to come out and celebrate all that has been accomplished in our long history of disability activism and advocacy and network to accomplish even more.
