Carlos “Uncle” Palacios, supporting a rally for The Arc California
As we are still celebrating the Holidays and New Year, I would like to also celebrate the life of a longtime advocate, The Arc of California’s Carlos Palacios…but known to almost all of us as “Uncle”! He has worked and volunteered for The Arc of California for what would have been 14 years in January!
I first met “Uncle” a little over 12 years ago as Executive Director for The Arc of San Francisco. I never knew him by any other name, until about 5 years later when I finally asked his nephew, Tony Anderson, “what is Uncle’s name?” Carlos! I had seen him at so many rallies and marches in Sacramento. He was always at the information table at all of our events and trainings, the best “PR” and “Ad Man” that we ever had! He kept all of our financial accounts balanced, with his past experience as a retired vice president of a bank. You couldn’t find a more dedicated and committed volunteer. He was a vital part of The Arc team along with Gwen Lopez, Greg deGiere, Teresa Anderson and of course Tony!
He started working at Bayberry in the Napa valley (our newest chapter of The Arc) for a couple of years, then volunteered with The Arc of California. He especially liked volunteering with People First and Joe Meadours, whose office was right next to his at the Arc. You could always see a gleam in his eyes, but especially lit up when working with self-advocates!
Carlos passed away on December 13th, but he remains in our hearts and memories. Thank you, Carlos, for all of your service to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. We will miss you “Uncle”!
