A Tribute to Julie Beckett and the Katie Beckett Waiver Legacy

We at The Arc/UCP California Collaboration join the loved ones of Julie Beckett, as well as thousands of families, colleagues, and friends in honoring the memory of Julie Beckett. She is the mother of Katie Beckett, who was the first Medicaid Home and Community-Based Waiver child. Today, many people across the country know just how critical the Katie Beckett Waiver is to ensuring children with disabilities or complex medical needs could live at home with their families rather than in institutional settings. The Katie Beckett Waiver makes it possible for children to receive high-quality care at home even when they would not otherwise qualify for Medicaid because of their parent’s income, assets, or limitations of private insurance.

In August 2020, Julie was interviewed at a peer-to-peer symposium where she gives a really great detailed account of her experience as Katie’s mom, her experience as an advocate, and the history behind how the Katie Beckett Waiver came to be. Among Julie’s many accomplishments she was also Co-Founder of Family Voices.  I am personally so grateful that this interview is available for all of us to watch and enjoy. On behalf of The Arc/UCP CA Collaboration, THANK YOU JULIE BECKETT for paving the way for so many children and families to be able to live full lives in the community.
