Celebrating the Love and Strength of Family Caregivers

By Felisa Strickland, Parent-Educator for Caring Futures, The Arc of California Board Member, and caregiver to daughter Lily

November is National Family Caregivers Month — a time to honor the millions of parents, family members, and friends who provide care and support to loved ones with disabilities, chronic illnesses, or age-related needs. It’s also a time to reflect on the shared strength, resilience, and love that bind caregiving families together.

Twenty-five years ago, when I became a mother to my daughter Lily, I did not know that my title of “Mom” would also be shared with that of “caregiver.” In fact, it took many years for me to see that as an accurate description of the love and care I provide for Lily. But like so many of you, I have been doing it for a long time, and it has changed over the years, from the basic care you provide your children as they grow up, to a lifetime of support.

I have developed into my role and learned to navigate the twists and turns that come with day-to-day care. I am proud to be my daughter’s caregiving mother. I am grateful for the relationship I have with her, and the joy of caring for her has enhanced my life. We are best friends, and like most best friends, we have our ups and downs, good days and bad days.

Sometimes being her caregiver is very hard work. It carries a ton of responsibility, uncertainty, worry, and fear that multiplies repeatedly as a parent. As the years go by, I have learned that I can’t do it alone. I am grateful to the parents who came before me, showed me the ropes and offered guidance and support. I am also getting tired and wonder about our future — Lily’s, and mine.

Two years ago, I got involved with The Arc of California’s Caring Futures program, a community for parents and caregivers who support a family member with disabilities. The program, which is still going strong, offers future planning classes, self-care classes, a webinar series, a resource library, and a private Facebook community. It has been an honor to be a part of it all since the beginning. We are celebrating the program’s two-year anniversary this month — during National Family Caregivers Month — and we are celebrating with YOU!

As parents and caregivers of someone with disabilities, we know there are many rewards to the love and care you provide. But we also know that it isn’t always easy, and it doesn’t always come with recognition or the supports and services we really need. That’s where Caring Futures comes in… we see you! We want you to know you are not alone. There is a community here for you, and we recognize all you do for your child, family, and community. We are so glad you are part of the Caring Futures family.

We hope you will make a special point to celebrate yourselves this month for all you do, and for the abundance of love you provide to others. This month is a reminder to pause and recognize all the other caregivers in our lives who have helped us along the way to be the best we can be, and to remember that our best is good enough. It truly does take a village, and we are so happy you are part of ours.

Caring Futures Announces the Launch of Self-Paced Future Planning Class for Caregivers

The Arc of California is proud to announce the launch of its self-paced “Future is Now” class series by Caring Futures — a program of The Arc of California! In response to the hundreds of caregivers who have been on a waitlist to take the future planning course, we wanted to meet their need for flexibility and create a class that can be taken at the caregiver’s convenience.

We hope that by being able to access the recorded class series at a time that works for you and your family, more caregivers will be able to start their future planning journey. Spanish self-paced classes will be coming soon.

A special thank you to certified future planning parent-educator Felisa Strickland for collaborating on the self-paced curriculum and sharing her personal knowledge and perspective on the future-planning process. Felisa is not only a parent to her daughter with developmental disabilities, but she is also a board member for The Arc of California and the board president of the Alpha Resource Center.

Each month, Felisa will offer Open Office Hours for those taking the Future is Now self-paced course. She will answer questions about the future planning classes and provide guidance to help make the planning process as smooth as possible for caregivers starting the journey. The link to register for the monthly meeting will be in the Class Portal that can be accessed after registering for the class.

The class series includes:

  • Comprehensive Future Planning Guide to design a support plan for you and your family member with disabilities;
  • Workbooks for parent/caregiver and family member;
  • Guidance on developing a future plan step-by-step.

Celebrating National Family Caregivers Month in November

Families are often the primary source of support for older adults and people with disabilities. In fact, today in America, more than 53 million family caregivers provide unpaid care.

That’s why every November we celebrate National Family Caregivers Month. While family caregivers should be celebrated and cherished every day, this is a time to recognize and honor caregivers nationally, raise awareness around caregiving issues, educate communities, and work to increase support for our nation’s caregivers.

At The Arc of California, we have established a program called “Caring Futures“, which offers a community of support, trainings and resources for caregivers of an adult family member with a disability. Caring Futures has monthly future planning and self-care classes, a robust resource center – all in English and Spanish. Additionally, there are dozens of educational webinars on a variety of topics for parents and caregivers, including special needs trusts, affordable housing, advocacy, self-determination program, public benefits, supported-decision making, navigating the healthcare system, sibling support, family therapy, self-care, and much more.

We know being a family caregiver can be a tough job, and want to share the caregiving journey with you. We want you to know you are not alone.

This month, as an essential part of the life-long support system for your family member with a disability, we are putting you first! Visit our CaringFutures.org website and learn more about our upcoming classes and webinars. Happy Family Caregivers Month!

Sign Up for The Arc’s Future Planner Training Series

Experience shows that adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) make better transitions from the family home when a person-centered future plan is in place. But what is a future plan?

The concept of future planning and what it entails is still not widely understood by many families and human services professionals.

Join The Arc’s Center for Future Planning for a three-part, live, online training series that will be offered this September. In part 1 of our training series, we will review the basics of future planning. Part 2 will cover how to build a plan and future planning materials that can be used when assisting families. During part 3 we will review helpful strategies to ensure families follow through with completing and updating their future plan. Participants who attend all three training sessions will receive a certificate of completion.

Sessions will take place Tuesday, September 10, 2019, Tuesday, September 17, 2019 and Tuesday, September 24, 2019
