The March 21st Senate Budget SubCommittee #3 on Health and Human Services hearing was well attended by disability rights advocates from across the State who shared testimony on the devastating impact of Governor Gavin Newsom’s proposed budget cut of $1 billion for disability services. Staff and board members from The Arc of California showed up in force, including two Arc Chapter Executive Directors Stacey Martinez of The Arc of Solano, and Tamica Hill of the Arc of Fresno and Madera Counties, who spoke out against the Governor’s proposal. Tamica was accompanied by her staff and  some of the individuals with disabilities they serve, who passionately shared how the cuts would affect their quality of life.

Thank You to all the advocates who have sent in opposition letters, emails and calls. It really made a difference!  The committee members heard us loud and clear. Senator Caroline Mandijar, Committee Chair, said this budget item was one of the top four priorities in her committee going forward thanks to all of your efforts and advocacy.

So far, 5,300 advocates have sent 22,000 emails, tweets and calls into our state elected officials asking them to reject the Governor’s budget proposal for disability services and supports. It’s incredible! Let’s not stop now! Keep sharing the Action Alert and telling your friends, family members, and colleagues to take two minutes to TAKE ACTION NOW! The Action Alert is available in both English and Spanish.

Next steps is to use the Action Alert to contact both budget chairs, Assembly Member Jessie Gabriel and Senator Scott Wiener and members of the Assembly and Senate Budget Committees. Please share your opposition and concern for how the Governor’s cuts will affect you and the people you support. We are stronger together!

Let’s ensure all Californians with developmental disabilities, their families, and the professionals who deliver their supports and services are on a #PathtoThrive!
