Senate Bill 882 Advances in Legislative Process with Zero “No” Votes and Gains Two Additional Co-Sponsors

By Teresa Anderson, Public Policy Director, The Arc/UCP California Collaboration

The Arc/UCP California Collaboration, United Domestic Workers/AFSME Local 3930, and the Association of Regional Center Agencies are all proud sponsors of SB 882 (Advisory Council on Improving Law Enforcement Interactions with the Intellectual and Developmental Disability and Mental Health Communities) authored by Senator Susan Talamantes-Eggman. Last week SB 882 was heard in the Senate Public Safety Committee, and it passed out of the Committee with zero “NO” votes and gained Senator Sydney Kamlager and Senator Rosilicie Ochoa Bogh as co-authors. We appreciate everyone’s support on this important issue. Thank you to Senator Eggman, Astrid Zuniga, Vice President of UDW, and Jordan Lindsey, Executive Director of The Arc/UCP California Collaboration for your dedication and testimony on SB 882. The bill is heading for Senate Appropriations where we will learn how much the State believes it will cost to implement this bill. We know the cost to the State to implement the bill is different than the cost savings associated with reducing reliance on police response to mental or behavioral health issues, but we do think it is an important consideration.

One of the main goals of the bill is for the Advisory Council to not only evaluate existing training but to make recommendations about effective ways to reduce reliance on law enforcement when it comes to responding to mental or behavior crisis calls. Thank you to everyone who sent support letters and called in during public comment to support this important bill. We will keep you informed and ask for continued support as we make our way through the process. You can read the most recent version of the bill here: https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov
