New Report Recommends Special Education Funding Go Directly to Districts, Not Regional Agencies

The Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) release a report on “Special Education Finance in California” and suggesting funds go directly to districts and not regional agencies, as well as other improvements to Special Education Local Plan Area’s (SELPA). An article by Ed Source, summarizes the reports recommendations.

SELPA’S should be a major area of focus in the next legislative session.

The report included the following points:

    • Increased collaboration with Special Education teachers and General Education teachers, Administrators and support staff;
    • Engagement with parents in the decision-making process and provide them with the necessary information and resources to create a more inclusive and supportive environment;
    • Provide ongoing professional development opportunities for educators and support staff to enhance their knowledge and skills in special education and also meet the diverse needs of special education students;
    • Work towards streamlining administrative processes and paper work to reduce the burden on educators and parents to ensure resources are allocated efficiently and effectively;
    • Utilize data to inform decision-making processes and monitor effectiveness/ outcomes of interventions and supports, which can identify areas for improvement and yield positive outcomes for students;
    • Advocate for increased funding to support the implementation of evidence based practices and interventions to ensure that students receive the necessary resources and support to succeed academically and socially.
