The Arc of California works with advocates, the legislature, law enforcement, families, victim services providers and many other stakeholders to increase awareness of the disparities people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) experience in the criminal justice system. Whether they enter the system as a suspect, perpetrator, victim or witness people with IDD often obtain little or no advocacy as a result of limited training, limited or inadequate resources and policies that don’t support equal access to justice. Through legislative efforts, training opportunities, conference workshops and other stakeholder engagements we work to address issues related to responding to victims with IDD, increasing access to victim services, adequate representation throughout the criminal justice system for victims, witnesses and perpetrators with IDD and overall strategies to address violence and abuse committed against people with IDD.
